Crispy Ingredient Collection

Chicken: Boneless chicken breasts are the chicken of choice for this recipe. Cook time depends on the size of the pieces. Choose similarly sized chicken breasts so they cook at the same rate.

Seasoning: Shake ‘n Bake is a one-stop, savory seasoning and breading mixture that comes with its own bag for mixing. What could be easier?

Shake Things Up!

  • While Shake ‘n Bake seasoning is perfect on chicken breasts, it’s also delicious on drumsticks, thighs, or chicken tenders.
  • Shake ‘n Bake comes in a variety of flavors. Don’t just use it on chicken, try it on pork, fish, and even veggies.
  • For an added extra kick, add some taco or chili seasoning, even a dash of red chili powder. A little grated parmesan cheese will make the outside even crispier.

How to Make Shake n Bake Chicken in the Air Fryer

  1. Moisten chicken and then shake each piece separately in Shake ‘n Bake.
  2. Lay the pieces in the Air Fryer and spray with oil.
  3. Cook chicken (full recipe below).

Always test for doneness by inserting a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the meat.

Sizzling Shake ‘n Bake Secrets

  • Always preheat the air fryer before adding food to the basket or tray. The initial blast of hot air crisps the outside of the food while keeping the inside moist and tender.
  • For an extra juicy Shake ‘n Bake chicken, use mayonnaise, buttermilk, or a beaten egg to moisten the chicken breasts before the breading stage.
  • Keep the skin on to help the breading adhere properly and keep the chicken extra juicy and flavorful.
  • Nothing goes better with fried chicken than classic salads like this chickpea pasta salad, pea salad, or a tangy lemon vinaigrette potato salad.

Shake Up Those Leftovers

Refrigerate leftover Shake ‘n Bake chicken in an airtight container for up to 4 days until ready to use again.

Reheat in the air fryer or a skillet on the stove. Chop it up and add to a stir fry or a wrap, or serve it cold, sliced over a crisp salad.

Freeze portions in zippered bags with the date labeled on the outside for up to 10 weeks.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts approximately 2 pounds
  • water to rinse and moisten the chicken breasts
  • 1 packet Shake N Bake coating mix about 2.5 ounces
  • olive oil spray or butter

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 400°F.
  • Rinse and moisten chicken breasts with water.
  • Add Shake N Bake to a bag and shake the chicken breasts, one at a time, to coat. Place chicken breasts on a plate as they are coated. Discard remaining coating.
  • Line air fryer basket with parchment paper. Space out coated chicken breasts in the basket. Spray each top gently with olive oil or add a small pat of butter (about ½-1 teaspoon).
  • Lower air fryer temperature to 380°F and cook chicken for 10 minutes.
  • Flip chicken, spray gently with olive oil (or add a small pat of butter), and cook for 5-9 minutes, or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Remove each piece as it is cooked through. Do not overcook.
  • Allow chicken to rest for 5 minutes before serving or slicing.

Notes

  • Cook times may vary due to the size of the chicken breast and also the type of air fryer.
  • It is a good idea to use a thermometer to ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • An 8-ounce chicken breast cooks in 19 minutes.
  • Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and in the freezer for 10 weeks.

  1. I have always liked Shake and Bake, but now I like it so much more! Cooking it in the oven has always left one side soggy, but this time I followed your recipe and it came out of the air fryer juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Instead of using water to moisten the chicken like I have always done, I followed your method of coating the chicken with a beaten egg. I also added a little pepper, salt, and paprika to the Shake and Bake to add a little more flavor to the chicken. Thank you for the recipe! It’s a definite keeper! Candace’s husband5 stars

  2. I didn’t think there was an easier way to make shake and bake chicken but now there is. Use the air fryer. Wow so easy and juicy. Candace’s husband5 stars
