What is an Apple Galette?
- A “galette” is a free-form, open-faced pastry that’s filled with sweetened fruit. Similar to a pie, galettes can be made with any kind of fruit and can be made sweet or savory!
- Cleanup is easy! This recipe uses a puff pastry that creates a flaky crust that rises around the edges like a pie but without a pie pan.
- Bake and serve in 45 minutes! Serve warm with homemade no-churn ice cream, or caramel sauce, or enjoy it chilled with a cup of tea!
Ingredients and Variations
There’s a flavor combination for any appetite, sweet or savory!
Puff Pastry – Just buy it and let it thaw in the refrigerator until ready to use! Roll-out pie pastry can be used, too, but won’t have that crispy, flaky crust the way a puffed-up pastry will (think croissant texture)!
Apples – Choose varieties that keep their structure while they bake. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, and Braeburns are excellent choices. Feel free to mix and match red and green apples for a colorful dessert!
Variations – Other fruits to consider are pears, strawberries, blueberries, and rhubarb. Cranberries are an optional add-in for this dessert (see recipe). Sliced almonds, walnuts, coconut, and even mini chocolate chips will make a galette a new recipe every time! For a savory galette, switch out the cinnamon sugar, toss apples in a vinaigrette, and layer thin slices of brie cheese with apples (or pears)!
