Ingredients and Variations
Salmon: Buy pre-packaged Alaskan smoked salmon or make it yourself and have plenty to use in other recipes or to freeze! Canned salmon needs to be drained first and will not have that “smoky” flavor but you could add a few drops of liquid smoke until you get the flavor you want.
Base: Cream cheese and sour cream give this dip its uber-rich and creamy base. For the best flavor, go for full-fat dairy. Greek yogurt can be used in place of sour cream for fewer calories and a tangier flavor.
Seasonings: Fresh dill and capers are all you need to balance the flavors of smoky, salty salmon. If using dried dill, the conversion is 1 teaspoon of dried to 1 tablespoon of fresh.
Variations: Add a little lemon zest or a splash of lemon juice and some sliced green onions for a punch of flavor and color. Make a zesty smoked salmon dip by adding some homemade Cajun seasoning or a mild Italian blend. Even a little freshly roasted garlic will add new depths of flavor to salmon dip.
How to Make Smoked Salmon Dip
- Process cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, and lemon juice in a food processor until combined (as per the recipe card below).
- Add remaining ingredients and “pulse” the dip until desired consistency.
Best Dippers for Dip
Sourdough crackers are sturdy and the perfect size for dipping, so are these fun wonton crisps, or hunks of toasted no knead bread. Celery, bell pepper wedges, and baked zucchini chips, and parmesan roasted broccoli are great, too! Smoked salmon dip can be used as a filler for stuffed mushrooms or mini peppers.
How to Store Smoked Salmon Dip
Leftover smoked salmon dip can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
