Crispy and Fresh BLT Sandwich

  • Classic sandwiches like BLTs, Philly cheesesteaks, and tuna fish sandwiches are loaded with flavor but are made with simple ingredients. BLTs can be served as a hearty lunch or a light dinner.
  • Best of all, BLTs are made with basic ingredients that are affordable, easy to find, and even easier to put together.
  • The combination of crispy, salty bacon, sweet and juicy tomatoes, and creamy mayo creates the perfect trifecta of sweet, salty, and savory flavor.
  • Delicious on their own, BLTs have infinite options for customizing and switching out the ingredients or switching up the condiments. Use up leftover chicken to make a chicken club sandwich.

Ingredients and Variations

  • Bacon: Oven bake or air fry bacon ahead of time so there’s lots on hand for sandwiches and salads all week long. Customize BLTs with flavored bacon varieties like pepper bacon, hickory smoked, maple flavored, or turkey bacon.
  • Lettuce: Whole leaves of romaine or iceberg lettuce add a cold and refreshing crunch to a classic BLT. You can also try shredded lettuce, spinach, spicy arugula, or even leftover coleslaw.
  • Tomato: This is the perfect recipe for using up those thick and juicy garden-fresh tomatoes. Smoked tomatoes are easy to make and add depth of flavor to scratch BLTs.
  • Bread: Any bread works, but for the full gourmet experience, use thick slices of artisan bread like sourdough, ciabatta, or challah.
  • Variations: Besides mayo, dress up BLTs with a smear of Dijon mustard or garlic aioli, softened cream cheese, sliced avocados or homemade guacamole, a fried egg, or any sliced cheese of your choice. Omit the bread for a low-carb wrap for an energizing workday lunch.

How to Make a Classic BLT Sandwich

  1. Prep lettuce and tomatoes (full recipe below).
  2. Spread mayo on one side of each piece of bread, top with lettuce, and tomato.
  3. Add bacon and remaining slices of bread, mayo side down.
  4. Press each sandwich together and cut diagonally before serving.

Tips for the Perfect BLT

To keep the tomatoes from making the bread soggy, pat them dry with paper towels or sprinkle them with a little salt in Step 1 to draw out excess moisture.

Toasting the bread will add an extra crispy crunch to BLTs, and for a more savory flavor, rub a fresh garlic clove over the toasted bread before assembly.
