Ingredients for Rice Krispie Squares

CEREAL: Kellogg’s is the original brand for rice Krispie squares but the store brand works just fine! Other cereals to try are Kix, Fruity Pebbles, or Cap’n Crunch.

MARSHMALLOWS: a 7-ounce jar of marshmallow creme (AKA ‘fluff) can be used instead of marshmallows and will melt faster. Mini marshmallows are great because they melt faster than regular-sized marshmallows. But if they aren’t handy, cut the larger marshmallows into 4 equal pieces before heating. Two cups of extra marshmallows make these bars extra chewy!

SWIRL IN: Peanut butter, caramel candies, or this DIY caramel sauce can be stirred into the marshmallow mixture before the cereal is added.

TOPPINGS: Anything goes! Mini chocolate chips or M&M’s, Mars bars, crushed candy canes, chopped dried fruit, or colorful jimmies!

Tips & Tricks

  • Fresh is best in this recipe! Fresh marshmallows and real butter make these bars so unforgettably delicious! A splash of vanilla blends everything together!
  • Keep hands and fingers clean and use a greased sandwich bag as a glove! Press down on the rice Krispie squares, then simply toss in the trash. Alternately, lightly wet hands with water and press into pan. Or use the back of a greased spatula or the bottom of a measuring cup to flatten them in the pan.
  • For thicker bars, use a smaller sized pan.
  • Line pan with foil or parchment paper for a quick and easy cleanup!
  • Cut rice Krispie squares quickly and easily with a moistened sharp knife or metal pastry cutter. Pop the squares out of the pan using the foil or parchment, place on a cutting board, and slice down instead of dragging the knife across the mixture.
