- We love them with an elegant overnight panettone French toast and some fresh fruit kabobs on the side.
Ingredients and Variations
Cocktail or mocktail? Make either or both!
Sparkling Wine: No need to buy pricey vintages for this recipe! Prosecco and brut champagne are excellent choices as well. Make your mimosas ‘extra’ with a splash of triple sec, if desired. Most champagnes have fewer calories and less alcohol by volume than spirits making mimosas a great choice for breakfast and brunch.
Blood Oranges: Grown mostly in Florida, blood oranges are famous in Miami for use in cocktails year-round. Look for them from December to April. Each orange will produce about 2 ounces of juice, and be sure to get extra oranges for fabulous garnishes!
Variations: Make mocktails using sparkling cider, 7-Up, or club soda! When the blood orange juice is gone, keep the party going and use lemonade cranberry juice, or fruit punch.
How to Make a Blood Orange Mimosa
- Pour one ounce of blood orange juice (strained, if desired) into a champagne flute (as described in the recipe below).
- Top with your choice of sparkling wine, prosecco, or champagne.
If You Build It, They Will Come!
Build a “Bubbly Bar” and arrange champagne flutes, fancy stir sticks and sugar cubes, a couple of ice buckets for chilling champagne, and lots of fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, or grapes!
Or, freeze some blood orange juice into single popsicles with a stick and transfer them to champagne flutes, add some bubbly, and set them out for guests who just can’t wait!
Mimosa Tips & Tricks
- To get the most juice from those precious blood oranges, roll them on the counter for a minute or so to loosen the juice.
- Cut each blood orange in half and press each half onto the reamer of a hand-held juicer and turn the fruit back and forth until all the juice is extracted.
- If using a blender, peel and cut blood oranges into chunks and puree until smooth.
