This frozen strawberry margarita recipe is a real “get the party started” cocktail and is so easy to make and enjoy year round. You’ll feel like you’re on vacation in Mexico or celebrating Cinco De Mayo enjoying a fresh strawberry margarita.

Make a batch of frozen strawberry margarita cocktails, put on your sombrero, lay in the hammock and soon you’ll be wastin’ away in Margaritaville, as Jimmy Buffet says. When dinner time rolls around, serve your strawberry margaritas with Mexican Lasagna and Mini Jalapeno Popper Corn Muffins.

Strawberry Margarita Ingredients

We make strawberry margaritas all through the year, and the key to a really great margarita is to use the freshest strawberries you can. Strawberries are available almost year round as they are grown in California and Florida. In most states, they are in season sometime between June and September. Frozen works in a pinch too, but will make your margaritas thicker, so defrost them if possible, or replace the ice with about 1 1/2 cups of water, and add water to your desired consistency for the margaritas. You can substitute other berries in the same quantity to make a berry margarita as well.

The other special ingredient in this frozen margarita recipe is the limeade concentrate. Our friends gave us their recipe using the frozen Bacardi® Mixers Margarita, but they agree that the strawberry margarita recipe with limeade is better! The limeade (or Bacardi® Mixers Margarita) adds a nice zesty, tangy flavor you just can’t get from lime concentrate or lime juice.

Margarita Alcohol

When making this margarita recipe, there is no need for premium tequilas or alcohol. You won’t really taste the difference between a Don Julio brand or Cuervo Gold brand, so don’t spend the extra money for a homemade strawberry margarita.

If you are a tequila connoisseur, or just like tequila, then use Cuervo in the recipe and serve with a shot of Don Julio on the side or a “float” of Don Julio. A float means adding a layer of alcohol to the top of the cocktail, like the float of dark rum in this Mai Tai Cocktail. To add a float of tequila, hold a spoon upside down over the top of the margarita close to it, and slowly pour the tequila. The small layer of tequila will look beautiful and taste premium!

While you can make this frozen strawberry margarita recipe without Triple Sec, it really adds a great flavor and I recommend including it. Cointreau or even Grand Marnier can be used in place of Triple Sec. Oooh, how about a Grand Marnier float? Yum!

A virgin frozen strawberry margarita is popular with the kids. It’s like a smoothie but is more refreshing on a hot summer day.

To mix it up a little, add some basil or mint, especially if you have plenty in the garden. Now you’ve got a strawberry basil margarita or strawberry mint margarita, both clever twists on a classic frozen strawberry margarita recipe.

How to Make a Strawberry Margarita

Our friends, who really are expert margarita makers, and drinkers, own a very cool Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker. Of course, their homemade frozen margaritas are perfect every time, but truthfully, you don’t need a fancy machine, just a good quality blender. We have a Vitamix (which we LOVE) and it makes amazing margaritas too.

To make the strawberry margarita, simply:

  • add liquids, ice, and strawberries to the blender
  • blend, adding water until the strawberry margarita has reached the consistency you like
  • serve and sip!

Use Rum for Strawberry Daiquiri

The beauty of this recipe is that if you are not a tequila lover, you can replace the tequila with rum and instantly you have a frozen strawberry daiquiri. Add in a banana for some extra smooth texture and you’ve got a Mexican smoothie drink. It’s a little healthier with a banana in the recipe too!

Again no need to use premium rum if making this into a daiquiri recipe. Bacardi Oakheart, Kraken and Captain Morgan spiced rums are my favorites and they are all reasonably priced. The rum is spiced with allspice, cloves, cardamom, star anise, cinnamon, and nutmeg so these fragrant spices add some depth to the drink and send you away to some tropical Caribbean island in the sun.

Have a strawberry margarita or a strawberry daiquiri with just one simple quick switch of alcohol. They are both party favorites.
