Fresh Ingredients

  • Strawberries: Choose fresh, sun-ripened, whole berries and remove the hulls. Save some whole strawberries with their hulls intact for garnish. In a pinch, you can use frozen (and thawed) strawberries or strawberry puree. Check to see if it has sugar added and if so, adjust the sugar in the recipe.
  • Lemon Juice: This recipe is all about the tart lemon flavors. Use a bottle of high quality lemon juice if you’re not using large lemons.
  • Sugar: Ordinary granulated (white) sugar works fine for lemonade. If using a sugar substitute, experiment with the amount to determine the level of sweetness you prefer.
  • Variations: Try making a strawberry limeade version by using lime juice instead of lemon juice. Garnish strawberry lemonade with lemon slices, whole strawberries, or mint leaves.

Juicy Lemon Tips

  • Lemons should be at room temperature before juicing.
  • Roll each lemon on the countertop before cutting it in half. This loosens the fruit and produces more juice.
  • Cut each lemon in half and use a handheld juicer, a reamer, or an electric juicer to extract the juice.
  • Cut some strips of peel with a zester and shave some zest off one or two lemons first for garnishes.

How to Make Strawberry Lemonade

  1. Dissolve sugar in boiling water and cool completely.
  2. Puree strawberries (full recipe below).
  3. Stir the strawberry puree, lemon juice, water, and some syrup in a pitcher
  4. Taste and add more simple syrup as desired.

Tips To Pro-‘seed’

You can strain the seeds from the strawberry puree using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth in Step 3 if desired.

Make Ahead for a Crowd

  • This recipe is super easy to double. Keep a double (or triple!) batch of simple syrup on hand for lemonade, coffee drinks, cocktails, and iced tea.
  • Strawberries can be pureed ahead and kept in a covered container in the refrigerator until ready to add water or frozen in quart-sized zipper bags for up to two months in the freezer.
  • Leftover strawberry puree can also be frozen in ice cube trays. Pop a cube or two out and add to sparkling water, smoothies, cocktails, or iced.
