What is a Blue Hawaiian Cocktail?

  • This blue Hawaiian drink recipe is the perfect blend of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice mixed with bright, turquoise curacao that also gives it a hint of orange citrus.
  • Stock up on tiny drink umbrellas, hurricane glasses, and garnishes for this bright, jewel-toned statement cocktail!
  • Blend up blue Hawaiians and make frozen blue hurricane slushies or freeze them into boozy popsicles!

Blue Hawaiian Cocktail vs Blue Hawaii Cocktail

Despite how close they are in name, the difference between blue Hawaiians and blue Hawaiis is pretty significant. Blue Hawaiians are made with coconut cream (crème de coconut) for a sweeter version, whereas blue Hawaiis use a sweet and sour mix giving them a noticeably tart flavor.

What’s in a Blue Hawaiian Cocktail?

Super easy to make with alcohol or non-alcoholic versions, blue Hawaiians are the ultimate summer party starter!

Curacao: The star of this drink, curacao (pronounced ‘kur-uh-sow’) is actually an orange-flavored liqueur similar to Triple Sec. It’s artificially tinted blue simply to set it apart from other liqueurs which it definitely does!

Rum: White rum keeps the color of the drink clear and bright, but any rum will do. Malibu rum has a distinct coconut flavor that adds more tropical flavor to blue Hawaiians!

Juice: Pineapple juice is the first choice because it’s tart and won’t cloud the color of the drink. If not available, use half lemon and half lime juice.

Variations: Vodka can be used on a 1:1 ratio with rum if desired. If you’re out of rum, use vodka and serve Blue Lagoons instead! Make a Blue Hawaiian mock-tail by using berry Kool-Aid in place of the curacao and Sprite for the rum.

How to Make a Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

  1. Add ice to a tall glass until almost full.
  2. In a mason jar or cocktail shaker add remaining ingredients (as described in the recipe below) and shake well.
  3. Pour drink into the tall glass with the ice.
  4. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino or my favorite, a luxardo cherry.

PRO TIP: One ounce equals two tablespoons.

Tips & Tricks for Delicious Drinks

  • Chill shakers and glasses, blenders, or pitchers for extra cold results!
  • Small cocktail swords are perfect for holding pineapple wedges and maraschino cherries in place (and give a pirate vibe)!
  • Strawberries, kiwis, and grapes can be frozen and become edible ice cubes that won’t water down your drink.
