Ingredients and Variations

Puffed Wheat Cereal: Any brand works! Sift the cereal in a colander to avoid the powdery stuff at the bottom of the bag, if desired.

Syrup: This is where the magic happens! Go for real butter for the best flavor and a quality brand of corn syrup.

Variations: Try other puffed grains like puffed corn and puffed rice. Use one or another or mix them and see what happens! It will all be tasty and delish! Swirl in some peanut butter and mini chocolate chips or M&M’s just for fun! Make puffed wheat squares without corn syrup and brown sugar and use marshmallows if you want a more “Rice Krispie” version, just keep in the cocoa powder, butter, and vanilla and follow the recipe as directed.

How to Make Puffed Wheat Squares

  1. Put cereal in a large bowl.
  2. Boil brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, and cocoa powder in a saucepan for 2 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla (as directed in the recipe below).
  4. Pour mixture over cereal and stir to combine thoroughly. Press into a prepared baking dish and cool before cutting into squares.

Pro Tip!

Don’t over-cook the syrup as it will make the finished squares too hard. A medium-low heat is best, and cook for 2 minutes only!
