Fresh Dill Dressing Ingredients

buttermilk , dill , mayonnaise, sour cream , worcestershire , garlic , pickle juice , salt and pepper with labels to make Dill Dressing
  • Buttermilk: Real buttermilk is best, but you can try making your own. Stir 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar into a cup of milk for an easy substitute.
  • Sour Cream: Full fat adds the best, rich and tangy flavor. You can sub in light sour cream, or Greek yogurt for extra protein.
  • Mayonnaise: Helps create a smooth and thick dressing.
  • Fresh Dill: Fresh is best, chopped very fine. If it’s not available use 1 teaspoon of dried dill for every Tablespoon of fresh.
  • Garlic: Use freshly minced garlic for the best bite, adjust with more or less.
  • Pickle Juice: The briny flavor pairs especially well with dill. The dip will thicken as it chills, so before serving, adjust the pickle juice to your desired consistency.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: Adds delicious, savory flavor.
  • Salt and Pepper: Add to taste to bring out the flavors and add a bit of warmth to the dressing.

Variations

  • Add chives, parsley, or even a little green onion along with the dill.
  • You can sub in vinegar for the pickle juice, but the pickle juice is best!
  • If dressing will be stored longer than three days, use garlic powder instead of fresh.
  • Create a dip by using less buttermilk or extra sour cream. Use a hollowed-out bell pepper as a serving vessel surrounded by fresh veggies, homemade pasta chips, pretzels, and breadsticks.
  • This homemade dill dressing is delicious as a condiment. Thin a bit, and add to a squirt bottle to drizzle over roasted asparagus or cauliflower. I like to serve it on a roast beef sandwich or a chicken burger.

How to Make Dill Dressing

  1. Combine the dressing ingredienys in a bowl or jar. (Full recipe below.)
  2. Whisk or shake until smooth, season to taste, and adjust the consistency if needed.
  3. Refrigerate in a sealed container and stir or shake before serving.

Best Dill Dressing Tips

  • Finely chop the dill so it blends evenly and adds fresh flavor throughout the dressing.
  • Chill the dressing for 15 to 20 minutes to give the dill and garlic time to flavor the creamy base.
  • Taste before seasoning with salt since the pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, and mayonnaise are already salty.
  • Give the dressing a good stir or shake before serving, as homemade dressings can thicken or separate in the fridge.

Keep It Fresh

  • Store dill dressing in a mason jar, cruet, or airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Keep it chilled since it contains fresh garlic and dairy, and do not leave it at room temperature for long.
  • Do not freeze as the buttermilk, sour cream, and mayonnaise can separate.
