Skip the green beer and sip a shamrock cocktail that blends melon liqueur and sparkling wine into a bright, festive drink with a hint of lime.

Sparkling Shamrock Cocktail with a straw

Recipe Highlights

  • Flavor: Refreshing honeydew sweetness is balanced by the crisp acidity of dry bubbles and a twist of citrusy lime flavor.
  • Skill Level: Absolutely beginner-friendly, no cocktail shaker or fancy equipment is needed, and measurements are forgiving.
  • Technique: Build this cocktail directly in the glass to keep the carbonation sharp and tingly. No need to strain or stir.
  • Serving: Try offering some options for guests alongside this shamrock cocktail, like this green mimosa, homemade Irish cream, or, for the kids, a homemade shamrock shake recipe.

2 Simple Ingredients

  • Melon Liqueur: Go for Midori to get that original neon green color and true melon flavor.
  • Sparkling Wine: Choose a Brut or Extra Dry Prosecco so the dryness balances the sweetness of the liqueur.

Variations and Optional Extras:

  • Lime: A twist of lime as a garnish helps cut through the sweetness.
  • Shimmer Dust: Pick gold or green edible luster dust to create a magical, swirling “pot of gold” effect.
  • Green Sugar: Rim the glass with colored sugar for a fun, crunchy texture that instantly makes the cocktail look polished and pretty.
  • The “Lucky” Garnish: Add a sprig of fresh mint or a green maraschino cherry for extra flair.
  • Lighter Version: Substitute half the sparkling wine for club soda for a lower-alcohol, extra-bubbly spritz.
  • Non-Alcoholic: Swap in melon-flavored syrup and sparkling white grape juice or ginger ale.

How to Make a Shamrock Cocktail

  1. Use chilled liqueur and sparkling wine.
  2. Add ingredients directly to a champagne flute (full recipe below).
  3. Add optional garnishes and serve.

Best Tips for Sparkling Cocktails

  • Chill the Glasses: Place flutes in the freezer for 15 minutes for an extra frosty drink.
  • Sugar the Rim First: Sugar the rim of the glass before adding the liquid for a clean finish.
  • Melon Ice: Freeze melon balls to chill your drink, which won’t water the drink down as ice does.
  • Prep Citrus: Save time by slicing limes ahead and keeping them covered in the fridge.
  • Shimmer Smart: Use just a touch of luster dust and stir it into the melon liqueur before adding the sparkling wine to ensure it is thoroughly mixed without losing the bubbles.

Serving and Storing Your Drinks

Drink Fresh: Enjoy immediately to savor the bubbles.

Leftovers: Seal any extra sparkling wine with a quality wine stopper to keep it fizzy for up to 2 days in the fridge.

Frozen Fun: Don’t freeze the cocktail, but you can freeze melon liqueur in ice cubes for a slushy twist.
