Smoked Eggs are Interesting!

While the eggs may look unusual, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the lightly smoky flavor that is just perfect in an egg! We’ve smoked them for a bit longer too. The outsides turn a deep amber color, and the flavor is slightly more intense.

We especially love them as smoked deviled eggs for an elegant appetizer! While they are a golden brown on the outside, the whites are still bright and this makes them a really colorful addition to a crudité platter! Just fan them out so guests can try a piece or two!

Smoked eggs take egg salad to a whole new level.  They are also excellent on a roast beef sandwich, or a BLT! Avocado toast with smoked eggs? Yup, the kids in our household dig that!  Tuck them into a wrap or Greek gyro, too!

They’re also great as a snack on their own! Perfect to pop into a lunch kit or for breakfast on the go. Add some extra flavor with a dash of smoked paprika, or with our favorite pork rub. I also love to sprinkle them with everything bagel seasoning!

How to Smoke Eggs

Smoked eggs taste absolutely amazing, and they are super simple to make!

  1. Start with whole, peeled hard-boiled eggs. Smoke eggs directly on the grill for about 45 minutes in a smoker until they are a light golden brown.
  2. Remove from smoker and refrigerate until they are cooled and ready to serve.

PRO TIP: The best way to peel hard-boiled eggs is to tap the big end until it cracks, then the small end. Roll the egg on its side and press down until the sides crack and then the peel should slide right off!

What Does Cold Smoked Mean?

Cold smoking typically starts with raw product and is smoked “low and slow” which keeps the food extra juicy while still imparting that unique, smoky flavor. The smoking temperature is usually under 90°F . We use hot smoking for this recipe.

What to Serve With Smoked Eggs

Aside from the ideas we’ve offered already, we like to serve them as a side dish to chicken dijon or next to our jalapeno popper quiche. We add them to our Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday tables if we’re smoking too!

As an appetizer, try them with cranberry meatballs and jalapeno poppers

Tips for Perfect Smoked Eggs

  • Before boiling, choose raw eggs that are clean and feel heavy in your hands.
  • To determine if eggs are fresh, place one in a cup of water. If the egg sinks to the bottom and lays horizontally down, it is fresh. If it floats, it’s not as fresh, although those eggs are good for scrambled eggs or to bake with.
  • If you smoke eggs for too long, they may start to become a little rubbery. We’ve found 45 minutes to be perfect!
  • Add eggs to the smoker when you’ve got some pork butt, chicken, or a brisket already on the go! In the smoker, we typically have chunks of apple wood for pork or hickory for chicken. Both are fabulous.

How to Store Smoked Eggs

Smoked eggs will last up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Keep them in a zip top bag or container with a tight-fitting lid.

If smoked eggs are in an egg salad or prepared in deviled eggs, they can be kept up to 4 days. Just refresh the flavors by adding a dash or two of salt and pepper!
