Get the party started with this two-ingredient, two-toned, buttery nipple shot recipe.
Sweet butterscotch schnapps are layered under Irish cream that appears to float on the surface in each decadent and boozy shot.
Make them to welcome guests to the party or as a cozy warm-up after a long day.
You’ll Enjoy Buttery Nipple Shots Because …
- Butterscotch schnapps and Bailey’s Irish Cream paired together taste just like vanilla and butterscotch pudding.
- It’s an eye-catching drink that everyone will “ooh and ahhh” over.
- If you’re squeamish about the name, a buttery nipple also goes by the genteel title of “butterball shot,” but no one will mind after one or two.
- Layered shots, like the Irish flag shooter, are as much fun to make as they are to drink.
Ingredients
Butterscotch Schnapps: No butterscotch schnapps? Use butterscotch-flavored sauce or syrup and mix with vodka. Or go alcohol-free and use butterscotch sauce or syrup instead.
Bailey’s Irish Cream: Buy it or make a homemade Irish Cream (think holiday gifts!) in just a few simple steps. For a non-alcoholic version of Bailey’s Irish Cream, you can use an Irish Cream flavored coffee syrup and add a little whipped cream garnish to dress it up.
Variations
Experiment and an extra boozy twist to buttery nipples by pouring a little vodka into the glass before the schnapps in Step 1.
Get creative by adding ice and ingredients to a martini shaker. Then shake well for a chilled, blended shot.
How to Make Buttery Nipple Shots
- Pour schnapps into a shot glass.
- Gently pour the Irish Cream over the back of a spoon, keeping it even with the top of the Schnapps. (See recipe below.)

Buttery Nipple Shot
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1½ ounces butterscotch schnapps
- ½ ounce Irish cream like Baileys Irish Cream
Instructions
- Using jigger, measure schnapps and pour it into a shot glass*.
- Hold the spoon upside down over the glass, with the tip of the spoon level with the schnapps in the shot glass. Very slowly, gently pour the Baileys over the back of the spoon.
- Serve and enjoy!
- *can be poured into two 1 ounce shot glasses to make two 1 ounce shots.
Notes
- If the spoon too high and is not level with the schnapps, the Baileys will not stay in a layer. So keep the spoon level with the schnapps.
- The ingredients will mix slightly. Allow it to rest untouched for a few minutes and it should separate a bit, so long as they are not mixed too much upon pouring.
- This shot can be mixed, however the fancy way to make the shot is layered.
- Garnish the top with a small amount of whipped cream if desired, especially if it is mixed.
