What is Manwich Sauce?

Manwich sauce is in a league all its own! Tomato-y, a little spicy and a little sweet, Manwich sauce is good on its own or as a mix-in for Sloppy Joes!

Super Saucy Sloppy Joes

  • This homemade recipe allows you to get creative! Fun flavor profiles like bold BBQ, Bourbon, maple, and brown sugar would all be delicious.
  • Got a crowd coming over? Sloppy Joe’s are economical, keep warm in the Crockpot, and let everyone help themselves!
  • Even a meat-free Manwich sauce can be used as a sauce for dipping, or a marinade for the grill! It’s low-carb, gluten-free, and great for low calorie wraps and salad toppings!

ingredients to make Manwich Sloppy Joe

Ingredients and Variations

THE MEAT: Ground beef is part of the original Sloppy Joe ingredients, but this recipe is great for leftovers like shredded chicken, turkey, sliced sausages, even cubes of tofu!

THE VEGGIES: Onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers add savory flavor to Manwich sauce. This is also a great way to use up extra veggies like potatoes, corn, or even mushrooms for a boost of extra nutrition!

THE BUNS: Classic Sloppy Joes are served on hamburger buns for that perfect handheld serving. Sub sandwich rolls are soft like hamburger rolls but larger and more open-faced to scoop in extra toppings. Hot dog buns make great handheld Sloppy Joe’s for kids, & less mess!

TOPPINGS: Make a DIY Sloppy Joe Bar and set out small bowls with a variety of toppings like shredded mozzarella cheese, sliced black olives, or some Instant Pot Pickled Jalapenos, some chopped onions, a tangy Creamy Coleslaw, or a dollop of sour cream.

How to Make Manwich Sloppy Joes

Manwich sloppy joes are super easy to make:

  1. Sauté onion with ground beef.
  2. Add tomatoes, sauce, & peppers. Simmer until sauce is thickened.
  3. Butter & season buns and bake until lightly browned (per recipe below).

Serve sauce on buns with a side of your favorite salad and watch this recipe disappear. Yum!

As a casserole:

  1. Line seasoned and baked buns in a casserole dish.
  2. Cover with cooked sauce, sprinkle on cheese or other desired toppings.
  3. Bake until the cheese is melted.

Ingredients

  • ½ small onion diced
  • 1 pound ground beef ¾-1 pound will work
  • ½ cup tomato diced (fresh or canned)
  • 10.5 ounces Manwich sauce 1 can
  • 2 bell pepper diced*
  • 4-6 hamburger buns
  • 2-3 Tablespoons butter
  • 1-1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • parsley for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Add onion and ground beef to large skillet or frying pan on medium high heat. Cook until meat is browned, breaking up with meat chopper (or wooden spoon), about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add diced tomatoes, sauce, and peppers. Once it comes to a boil, reduce heat to simmer (about medium low). Cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tomatoes and peppers are cooked and sauce is thickened. If sauce becomes too thick, add ¼ cup water and cook to desired thickness.
  • Meanwhile, butter open sides of buns and place on a baking tray. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder and parsley if using. Bake for 6-8 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  • Serve meat sauce over buns, open faced or like a burger.

Notes

*Use any combination of two yellow, orange, red, or green bell peppers
