This homemade country gravy recipe is rich, creamy and so comforting.

Cozy and Creamy Country Gravy
- Homemade country-style gravy needs 5 ingredients, minimal prep, and a single skillet.
- Typical country gravy uses only butter in the roux, while our richer sausage gravy includes the rendered fat from the sausage for even more flavor.
- Country gravy is a go-to starter recipe that builds the base for countless comforting Southern meals.
- Versatile white country gravy is smooth, creamy, and ready to scoop over homemade biscuits, chicken fried steak, or a hearty pile of breakfast potatoes.

Simple Staples and Swaps
- Sausage: Pork breakfast sausage is juicy and flavorful, but you can use turkey sausage or any pork sausage removed from the casings.
- Butter: Use butter or bacon grease as the fat in this recipe, along with, or instead of, the sausage drippings.
- Flour: White flour is necessary to make the roux, which is the base for country gravy.
- Variations: Mix up the flavors and add a seasoning blend that matches the menu. Try a zesty Cajun blend or whisk in some red pepper flakes, hot sauce, or dried herbs like rosemary or sage. Browning the roux by cooking it longer will impart a richer roasted flavor, if you don’t mind a darker gravy.

Measure Like a Pro
Be sure the flour is measured properly before using. Whisk the flour in its container, sprinkle into a measuring cup, then level off.
How to Make Country Gravy
